The field notes
About
Thailand's traditional New Year combines three fixed national holidays with water fights, temple visits, family gatherings and local ceremonies. The official dates are 13–15 April, although some cities and communities extend celebrations beyond that window.
Highlights
- Thailand's largest nationwide celebration
- Traditional water-pouring, temple merit-making and family reunions
- Major public water-fight zones in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket
Plan it well
- Book intercity transport early; millions of people travel home around the holiday.
- Waterproof valuables and assume you may be soaked in public celebration areas.
- Treat water gently around monks, older people, babies and anyone clearly opting out.
